Colombia’s electricity mix currently relies heavily on hydro generation. This exposes the country to extreme weather-related events, not least El Niño, which regularly causes droughts and puts stress on the power system. In the past, thermal plants have acted as a reliable reserve but with domestic gas reserves depleting quickly, an alternative needs to be found.

In future, wind and solar PV generation will be key to mitigating the risks that the Colombian market faces and meeting the growth in demand expected over the coming decades. A number of economic and technical uncertainties will need to be overcome first, including the commissioning of the 2.4GW Ituango hydro plant and various connection issues.
